Portal Gun Prop
3D printed Portal Gun from Portal Stories: Mel (2020)
This project came from my love of Portal. The Portal Gun is one of the most recognizable props in video gaming history, but the standard one has been done a million times before. I decided to go a different route and try making the retro-inspired portal gun from Portal Stories: Mel.
This prop was modeled in Fusion 360 and 3D printed out of PLA filament. These parts were then painted to achieve the desired look.
Parts
- Digispark Arduino-compatible microcontroller
- Neopixel addressable RGB (ring and single)
- Momentary pushbutton
- Toggle Switch
- Frosted Acrylic tube
If I had to make this again, I'd spend more time dialing in my printer to make printing the arm fingers easier, and print the core in two parts to make it easier to add in the lighting and wiring. Overall, I'm still very happy with how it turned out. I need to repair it since the arms got damaged when I moved, but it still looks pretty cool.
